Meeting Details
Reaction Hazards represent a safety risk in both lab experimentation and full-scale production. Reaction Hazards include runaway exotherms, decompositions, off-gassing and pressure generation. The presentation will review the common tools for studying Reaction Hazards, including DSC, ARC, ARSST, VSP2 and the RC1. The use of these tools to quantify the desired reaction and side reactions will be discussed. Some real life experiences of reactions that went awry will be highlighted.
Michelle Jones earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Ohio State in 1990 under Matt Platz studying kinetics and mechanism of carbene reactions. Dr. Jones formerly led the St. Louis Process Safety Laboratory for Pharmacia/Pfizer. Dr. Jones has an additional 10 years of experience in the field of thermochemistry and process development with Mallinckrodt/Covidien. Most of her development experience at Covidien is in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic drugs, including X-ray contrast media, MR imaging agents and nuclear medicines.
